HOLDS
- Students placed on an AIP are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for classes each semester.
- Students should also speak with an advisor prior to withdrawing from any classes to avoid potential policy violations that may result in partial or total withdrawal for the semester.
- Students on Supervision or Probation are required to meet with an advisor to have their registration schedules approved and registration holds removed.
The information below describes the criteria by which a person is assigned an academic standing within the AIP and what the consequences of each standing are:
There are four levels of scholastic discipline for all students regardless of status or program: warning, supervision, probation, and exclusion. A student who is eligible to enroll in courses is in good standing. Students are placed on:
- Warning when their cumulative Georgia State University GPA is below 2.0 and they were not on supervision or probation the previous semester in attendance. However, students on warning who attempt 6 or more semester hours in the subsequent semester and earn a Georgia State term GPA of 2.3 or better will remain on warning.
- Supervision when their cumulative Georgia State GPA is below 2.0 and they were on warning the previous semester in attendance. However, students on supervision who attempt 6 or more semester hours and earn a Georgia State term GPA of 2.3 or better will remain on supervision.
- Probation when their cumulative Georgia State GPA is below 2.0 and they were on supervision the previous semester in attendance. However, students on probation who attempt 6 or more semester hours and earn a Georgia State term GPA of 2.3 or better will remain on probation.
- Exclusion when their cumulative Georgia State GPA is below 2.0 and they were on probation the previous semester in attendance.
Students on warning, supervision or probation may be allowed to enroll with specific restrictions (see Section 1360.20). Students on exclusion are not eligible to enroll in any undergraduate program or under any status at Georgia State. No transfer credit will be accepted for courses taken at other institutions while on exclusion.

A college preparatory hold is placed on a student’s record, when the student is required to address a particular academic concern. Contact your academic advisor immediately to resolve this hold.
At Georgia State, every freshman is required to meet with an academic advisor prior to completing your first year (or 30 credit hours) of attendance. During your mandatory advisement session, your academic advisor will assist you with course scheduling, creating a solid academic foundation, and assist with any academic challenges you may be facing.
An i-CARE Early alert hold is placed on a student’s record, when a professor believes your academic advisor may have some resources that will help you succeed in your academic career. To learn more about the program please schedule an appointment with your advisor.
Georgia State students must officially declare a major by the end of their 2nd semester. All students are encouraged to declare a major as early as possible; however, it is especially important for students following a track in natural sciences, health science or mathematics. Students must meet with an academic advisor to officially change or declare a major. Academic advisors are able to help students research various majors available at Georgia State, career options and future opportunities, and with the overall advantage of utilizing the University Career Services.
